We ate crab, week 5

So Joe asks if it's ok if he makes a crab pasta at our house. He and Devin had gone crab fishing in Halfmoon Bay and caught enough crab to feed an army. Since I have been cooking meat with all of my pots and pans for years now, I couldn't see the harm in letting him heat up some crab meat in my newly vegan kitchen. Codie and I were still at work when Joe sent her the text about cooking the crab. We were both feeling challenged  with keeping our vegan diet interesting and crab pasta sounded pretty amazing. For the next hour at work we debated weather or not to eat the crab. It was local and we knew exactly where it came from not to mention it needed to be eaten. We had a discussion earlier that day about possibly incorporating some wild caught seafood into our diets but decided not to for now. Long story short we ate the crab!!! Joe made an awesome non-dairy Alfredo with peas and fresh herbs, oh and crab. It tasted amazing. Not quite as amazing were the nightmares Codie had or the overwhelming feeling of remorse I woke up with. I felt nasty, like I cheated on my boyfriend or told a long kept secret. We have since gone strictly back on our vegan diets. Though I am not married to being entirely vegan for eternity, I am not ready to fall off the veggie wagon. I still have more to learn and more to share. All I know is Codie and I were both butt hurt after eating the crab.....

My Blog Book Club!!

Hello all of my dedicated followers ( Mom, Dara and I think Monica ) I am so excited to announce the blogs first book club book! Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a year of food life, by Barbara Kingsolver. Even if you think I'm completely wack with this whole vegan thing, I truly believe you will enjoy this book. Author Barabara Kingsolver and her family abandoned the industrial food pipeline to live a rural life, vowing that, for one year, they'd only buy food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Part memior, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetabel, Miracle is an enthralling narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: you are what you eat.

Check, check it out!

Vegan Bitch, Day 32

So I'm over my vegan melt down. I strongly considered throwing in the veggie towel at the 30 day mark but I am so glad that I didn't. Not only is my desire to eat meat slim to none, my tireless research on my new lifestyle and it's abundant positive effects on the environment have encouraged me to press on. In the beginning it was new and exciting. Now that my veggie honeymoon is over and the reality of everyday veggie life is setting in, I am realizing that I still have a lot to learn. I found a great cook book designed for busy vegan "student's". Though my mommy is not supporting my expensive red quinoa addiction, nor footing the bill for my bulk raw almonds, I consider myself a vegan student. The book is great. It's full of quick, simple, inexpensive recipes for the vegan on the go! Tonight I am making buckwheat soba noodles with broccoli and spicy peanut sauce... for a boy :)

Vegan Action | FAQ's

Vegan Action | FAQ's

Chicken Noodle Soup is not vegan, 1 month

So we did it! 30 days without consuming any animal products what so ever. As I sit here writing this, I am batting the worst cold I have had in a very long time. The kind that  prevents you from attending your best friends wedding reception :( . My hectic schedule finally caught up with me and I'm sicker than a dog. This past week has been the most challenging yet. When I say challenging, I am not referring to cravings for pepperoni pizza rather making time to prepare and cook food that supply balanced nutrition and energy.  This must be the point where people get over this vegan thing. I'm at a crossroads. I'm so busy that paying close attention to eating the correct balance of  foods has been put on the back burner. This past week I have felt bloated and irritable. My diet has been carb heavy which my body is not super stoked on. On the other hand, I have no desire to eat meat so I need to figure this out. I knew this was going to be a challenge and I think I'm up for it. I'm home sick from work today so I'm going to Google: sick busy vegan?

Vegan and the City, Week 3

Codie and I have both experienced a dip in our vegan enthusiasm this week. I have been working like a honey bee, managing a restaurant and planning weddings! Between dating (a whole other blog!), making time for my family, friends, dogs, cleaning, grocery shopping and blogging, I'm shocked that I haven't succumb to a square of cheddar or two. I have been referring to this past week as "main stream vegan". Blues Festival, Giants Game, Sex and the City 2 with the girls, working weddings, and double shifts at the restaurant... All things that don't give a shit that I am vegan. The blues fest, held in Santa Cruz, was accommodating. As tradition has it, aunt Cathy and I "hock a dog" every year at the blues fest. We start with a few beers then make our way over to the the dog stand where we dress a meaty, all beef frank with the all the fixings and cheers buns before biting into the juicy wiener! This year we did a lap around the food area before committing to a location. We decided on veggie burritos from the El Palomar booth. The El Palomar is on the list of vegan friendly restaurants in Santa Cruz so they didn't look at me like I had three heads (like the chickens being served on kabobs from the booth next door) when I asked if the beans were made with lard or the guacamole contained sour cream. They didn't of course so aunt Cathy and I changed tradition and hocked a vegan burrito with a Coor's Light back instead.

The Giants game was a different story. My date was extremely thoughtful and took me to a vegan restaurant in the city before the game. Herbivore was fantastic! Everything on the menu was completely vegan. I wanted to order something I hadn't experimented with at home so I decided on penne with lemon grass "cream" sauce. It was amazing! I batted my eyelashes at the chef and he told me his secret to vegan "cream" sauce, non diary sour cream. It was decadent and satisfying, a good thing because my fruitless search for something vegan at the game was inevitable.

Working, working, working, oh and working. This has been the greatest challenge thus far! Waking up early after working a double shift at Beefland, reviewing the details of today's wedding over coffee while talking to my Mom on the phone about picking up my dogs, Dara is beeping in on the other line and my sister is texting me about babysitting, all while slapping together an almond butter and banana sandwich to sustain me through the 16 hour day I have ahead of me because I know that nothing on the wedding menu is vegan because I helped plan it (OMG, just writing that makes me want to pop a Xanax)! Next weeks calendar is equally full. Thank god for my vegan buddy Codie:) Namaste
